Back in the swing of things

What a week last week was! The challenges of preparing a meal, getting showered, dressed, and made up in the dark, and communication with the outside world were contrasted with the serene nights on the deck, reading by candle light, sharing rare and precious time with the kids sans tv and video games, and going to sleep at a decent hour.  But today is very different. Today, the ease of routine has setteled in, alarm clock wake-up call, hair dryer, and coffee freshly brewed welcomed me as I began another Monday. At school however, the restlessness of schedule interruptions and retreats have made it difficult to get antsy students willing to settle in. This Monday already seems like a long week  - and I can’t imagine what Thursday will feel like - considering this is the first full week of school for us in a very long time!  I guees it truly is time to get back in the swing of things.

Why CAL?

Yesterday I was sitting in the high school media center, and as I looked through the glass into the adjoining elementary center, I saw my 4th grade son checking out books with his class. It was spontaneous joy to see him and be affirmed that he was OK. That “OK-ness” is more than knowing he’s safe or physically protected. It’s knowing he was led by his teacher - a godly example of mother and educator, to a library which provides an expanse of knowledge with regard to the guarding of young minds. It was knowing that he was happy and comforted by my presence, if just to offer a smile and wave through the window pane.

Why CAL? Andrew.

Open House 2008

What a wonderful time we had at Open House last night! I was so encouraged by the parents who came. Although I was somewhat nervous, you made it very easy for me by your kindness and expressions of gratitude. I know why my students are so great!

CAL PTO - THANKS!!

A great big thank you to the CAL PTO! I was surprised a couple of weeks ago with a gift bag full of goodies! As I scrounged through the contents, I thought “These are all my favorite things!” WOW! Thank you for such a sweet and thoughtful gift!

Also, Thanks to the Prioncipal’s discretionary funds from the PTO, my class was able to purchase new dictionaries!  Thanks!!

Class of ‘09 - Senior English

I love teaching Senior English - the literature, the students, the discussions. This year’s classes have started successfully. We began the semester with Hamlet - the students read it for their summer reading, and we watched the Kenneth Branagh direction of the play on video. The video was very long, but it was so helpful for the students to see the play in action. Afterall, plays are meant to viewed, not read! This week, we will wrap up our Hamlet study, but never fear - Shakespeare will return later on in the year! Today and tomorrow, we will complete the Hamlet CSI Investigation. It was fun looking at King Hamlet’s murder through the eyes of a crime scene investigator, and the students learned much about identifying character by taking on the roles of Detectives who interview characters to find who is really guilty.

I pray for my students that they will be a blessing to someone in their lives today.
